The Levant

Gerardus Johannis Vossius (Gerrit Vos) (1577-1649) was a Dutch humanist who suggested Palestine as the location of Atlantis.

Jaime Manuschevich from the University of Chile recently proposed that Atlantis corresponds with the Levant, specifically Israel and Sinai, and that this region was an island in the Great Rift Valley, surrounded by the Jezreel Valley on the north, the Dead Sea and Red Sea on the east and the Gulf of Suez and the Mediterranean Sea on the west until 5600 BCE.

In addition, Manuschevich proposes that Atlantean civilization corresponds to the Natufian peoples, the first food-producing people, whose main political and harbor center was Jericho. These people lived in the region in the dates established by Plato, 11,600 BCE.

About The Levant

The Levant is a geographic and cultural region consisting of Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and sometimes part of southern Turkey (the former Aleppo Vilayet), and the Sinai region of Egypt. Precise definitions have varied over time. Since Cyprus is part of the European Union, Cyprus is listed under the European theories of Atlantis for the purposes of Atlantipedia.
