In Plato's account of the destruction of Atlantis, earthquakes and flooding are given as the catastrophes that occurred. However, Plato does not give an explanation for the cause of these natural disasters. It is therefore a matter of interpretation as to whether a volcano was the root cause. Tectonic stresses could be equally responsible. However, volcanoes have certainly triggered earthquakes and tsunamis in the past, the evidence in the geological record is vast and undeniable. In particular the eruption of Thera in the 2nd millennium BC which ended the Minoan Civilization has been the source of great conjecture as to whether this was the origin of the Atlantis story. |
