The AFP is reporting that Iraqi archaeologists have discovered a 4,000-year-old Sumerian settlement in southern Iraq, in the southern province of Dhi Qar, is in the desert near ancient Ur, the biblical birthplace of Abraham. Sumerian writings, dating back to the era of the third Sumerian dynasty have also been found, as well as artefacts, which include sickles and knives, largely dateing back to around 2000 BC, during the rule of King Amarsin, the third king of the third Sumerian dynasty. The site is unusual because unlike previous Sumerian settlements that were built close to water or rivers, this one is located in the desert. |
